Locomotion
By Jacqueline Woodson
First Stage Children's Theatre, Milwaukee, WI
The challenge: play with space and time in this heartwarming tale of triumph over tragedy. Young Lonnie Collins Motion lives with foster mom Miss Edna in Brooklyn. Her apartment becomes his classroom, but also must shift in time to become Lonnie's childhood home as he relives his memories of the family he and his sister have lost. Scrim panels were used to portray memories and a blackboard for the school, and a fire escape platform lets Lonnie look out over the city.
